Galaxy Dynamics sans MOND sans Dark Matter 2 nd February 2008

چکیده

In previous work we have established that a particular quasi-classical theoretical viewpoint about the nature of gravitation in galaxy discs provides extremely high concordance (comparable with MOND) with the observed dynamics in optical discs. In this paper, we consider the possibility that the optical disc and the flat radio disc represent distinct dynamical regions which are inherently described by distinct phases of the same over-arching theory of which the quasi-classical theory is but one phase. This is a defining moment for the theory under discussion since the only natural generalization available is that from the existing quasi-classical (one-clock) model into a quasi-relativistic (two-clock) model. The quasi-relativistic disc turns out to be a stationary hyperbolic disc within which information propagates along characteristics and within which the rotation curve is necessarily exactly flat. The transition between the two components of the disc is managed by physically determined jump conditions which are represented by a set of non-linear algebraic equations. These equations predict the existence of a forbidden region within the parameter space which coincides exactly with that part of the parameter space in which there is an already observed highly significant underpopulation of galaxy discs.

M ar 2 00 8 Rings and shells of “ dark matter ” as MOND artifacts

MOND predicts that a mass, M , contained within its transition radius rt ≡ (MG/a0) , may exhibit a feature at about that radius in the form of a shell, or projected ring, in the deduced distribution of its phantom dark matter. This occurs despite the absence of any underlying feature in the true (“baryon”) source distribution itself. The phenomenon is similar to the appearance of an event horiz...

The Wedding of Modified Dynamics and Non-exotic Dark Matter in Galaxy Clusters

We summarize the status of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) in galaxy clusters. The observed acceleration is typically larger than the acceleration threshold of MOND in the central regions, implying that some dark matter is necessary to explain the mass discrepancy there. A plausible resolution of this issue is that the unseen mass in MOND is in the form of ordinary neutrinos with masses just...

Galaxy groups and the modified dynamics

I estimate Modified-Dynamics (MOND), median M/L values for recently published catalogues of galaxy groups. While the median, Newtonian M/L values quoted for these catalogues are (110 − 200)h75(M/L) , the corresponding values for MOND are less than 10 (M/L) (where the mass includes contributions from galactic, and intra-group gas). The Dwarf Galaxy Ddo 47 as a Dark Matter Laboratory: Testing Cusps Hiding in Triaxial Halos and the Mond Paradigm

We present an analysis of high resolution HI data of the dwarf galaxy DDO 47, aimed at testing the hypothesis that dark halo triaxiality might induce non-circular motions resulting in rotation curves best fitted by cored halos, even if the dark matter halo is intrinsically cuspy. This hypothesis has been invoked in order to reconcile the predictions of the ΛCDM theory with the rotation curves o...
